The Winery

A chance trip through the foothill town of Fair Play resulted in the creation of one of the Fair Play area’s most well known wineries. Michael Chazen fell in love with the Fair Play area and found a 155-acre estate to call home. Perry Creek Vineyards sits on a ridge top looking down over the Cosumnes River. The winery and tasting room facilities are done in the old California mission style and opens to a large picnic area for relaxing. The winery was sold by Michael Chazen in 2006 and is now under new ownership.

The Vineyards

As with so many of the mountain vineyards in the Fair Play area, the estate crosses many microclimates. The winery is committed to matching the right variety to the specific terroir, and has had great success with their estate-grown grapes. The winery and eleven acres of vineyards were purchased by partners Michele Wilms and Dieter Juergens, adding to the 29 acres of vineyards they already owned in the Fair Play AVA. They plan to concentrate on Syrah, Zinfandel, and Petite Sirah as their flagship varietals, based on compatibility to the soils of these vineyards.

The Wines

Perry Creek has created a very large following locally, and beyond, for their Zinfandel wines. There are not too many Zinfandel enthusiasts in the area that have not tried a bottle of ZinMan. In addition to Zinfandel, the winery is known for its Rhone and Bordeaux style wines.

The Winemaker

The winemaker at Perry Creek Vineyards is Joseph Flemate. He joined Perry Creek in 2006 after a career in the Napa and Sonoma Valleys. He shares the management of the winery with operations manager Stefan Tscheppe from Austria, and winemaker and viticulturist Garrett Buckland from the Napa and Sonoma regions of California.
