The Winery

Winery by the Creek is known for two things: incredible wine caves and a wide selection of wine. The caves, attached to the tasting room, contain not only a wonderful art collection, but also about 250 to 300 barrels of aging wine. The winery, like the Fair Play Bistro located next door, is owned by Charles B. Mitchell.

The Vineyards

The winery purchases grapes from throughout California, seeking to find the best grape from the best location. They purchase a great Old Vine Zin from Amador along with Zinfandels from throughout the foothills. Many of the vineyards they purchase from have had a working relationship with the winemaker for over ten years.

The Wines

This is one of just a few of the local wineries making varietals out of both Primitivo and Petit Verdot. The winery also offers some very fun barrel tastings by candle light in the caves and sells many of their wines as barrel futures. The winery offers an old vine Zinfandel Port made from a vineyard planted in 1888 and dry farmed for over 100 years. You can just imagine the intense flavors from grapes with yields of less than one ton per acre.

The Winemaker

Charles Mitchell, who grew up in the winegrowing regions of France, is the winemaker at Winery by the Creek. He is heavily influenced by the homemaking of his home country, producing wines in the European style.
