The Winery

Karly winery is a short distance off the main road, set in a lovely setting surrounded by vineyards and great local views. The tasting room is small, rustic, and inviting. They have a number of theme baskets for sale and often offer cheese to pair with their wines, making the tasting experience that much more complete.

The Vineyards

The majority of the grapes that Karly uses in their wines are estate grown. These include Barbera, Roussanne, Marsanne, Syrah, Petite Syrah, Sauvignon Blanc, and Zinfandel. The winery also purchases Zinfandel from other Amador county vineyards such as the Sadie Upton Vineyard, which is known for having vines planted as far back as 1922.

The Wines

Karly has made a reputation for their great Zins. They offer four styles from a fruity, lighter dinner wine, to a big bold Zin blended with Petite Sirah. When the weather is just right to allow the grapes to hang on the vines into late fall, they produce a late harvest style Zin as well. Furthermore, the winery has developed quite a following for their crisp, refreshing Sauvignon Blanc.

The Winemaker

Buck Cobb was an Air Force jet fighter pilot and later a nuclear engineer who moved to Amador with his wife Karly to retire. It wasn’t long before he discovered the allure of Amador County Zins and became a committed winemaker. His son, Garth, has recently assumed winemaking duties at the winery.
